Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen, Germany has been repurposed to house several museums. A heritage trail through the former colliery tells the city’s history of coal mining and steel production. In a former coal-washing plant, the Ruhr Museum is dedicated to regional history. The Zeche Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site also contains a café, open-air theater and sculpture garden. Essen Central train station is nearby for easy access to other points of interest in the Ruhr region.
The opening hours are from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm and on Monday from 11 am to 6 pm. Entrance fees are charged for some exhibitions, while others are available free of charge. Special guided tours and educational programs can also be arranged by prior appointment.
