The Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen, Germany has been renovated to now display several museums. For example, one can walk the heritage trail that goes through the former colliery which tells Essen’s history of coal mining and steel production. In addition, inside a former coal-washing plant is the Ruhr Museum dedicated to regional history. Another museum located in an old boiler house is called The Red Dot Design Museum which exhibits contemporary design with everyday objects .

The Zeche Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site contains a café, open-air theater and sculpture garden. Essen Central train station is nearby for easy access to other points of interest in the Ruhr region. 

The opening hours are from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm and on Monday from 11 am to 6 pm. Entrance fees vary depending on the exhibition; some exhibits are available free of charge while others require an entrance fee. Special guided tours and educational programs can be arranged by prior appointment only .

Essen’s lively cultural scene awaits visitors, with festivals such as Ruhrtriennale, Jazzfest, and Popfest. If you’re looking for something to do at night, the city offers a wide range live music and theater performances, in addition to more traditional bars and clubs.
